10/13-16/12 A trip to Japan, south island, took us to Fukuoka and south to Isahaya area including Mt. Unzen and a great shorebird area. A HUGE THANKS to our wonderful guide, John Andrew Wright of Johnandrewwright.com who drove us to all the great spots to bird on 10/13 and 10/14! A great effort and a lot of fun - Thanks, John! 10/14/12 Shorebirds galore (see next page!) Shown here: a Red Knot (1-with Great Knot behind,2-Black-bellied Plover behind), a Kentish Plover ,and a Eurasian Kestrel pair. It was a real treat to see the Pied Harrier (juv.m.) that was visiting southern Japanat the time we were there! Also, Eurasian Skylark , Zitting Cisticola , and Eurasian Wigeon in flight. |

Unzen and a great shorebird area. 10/15 and 10/16 Fukuoka: Ohari Park and the Botanical Park were visited and offered some looks at a bathing Great Cormorant and juvenile, a Goldcrest flock , a Brown-eared Bulbul , an Oriental Turtle Dove , a Mallard trio , an Oriental Greenfinch , and a Black-tailed Gull . |

Unzen and a great shorebird area. 10/15 and 10/16 Fukuoka: Ohari Park and the Botanical Gardens were visited: First, a Varied Tit study. A flock was taking a bath and didn't seem to mind the camera. Then, a Japanese Whiteeye flock flitted by. Third, a Grey Heron study showing these magnificent birds interacting in great light. Finally, Eastern Great Tit , Great Egret , and a Grey-streaked Flycatcher . |
